Counseling

Introduction

Work with One of Westchester’s Premier Guidance/School Counselors

Because of my experience in the field, I am committed to making the college admissions process individualized, comprehensive, supportive, positive and exciting. My mission is to complement, not compete with, the student’s high school counselor’s efforts and be sensitive to the family’s role and contribution.

My four Master’s degrees and permanent certifications in Secondary English, Special Education, Guidance & Counseling, and Administration & Supervision have served my students and their families well.

I have successfully helped place students in the top colleges and universities in the world and have been recognized for my expertise in servicing and placing all students, including those with special needs, in the most appropriate and competitive colleges and programs.

Since I have been in the college counseling profession in a competitive Westchester high school for over 25 years, serving as the Director of Guidance for 18 years, I have developed a long standing relationship with directors of admissions, admissions counselors, professors and coaches from across the country and abroad, which has been very beneficial for my students.

The College Connection

Which colleges are right for me?

There are so many factors in deciding the right colleges/universities to apply to and then choosing “the one” to attend. Since this is one of the most important decisions of a student’s life that will not only affect his or her world, but the entire family’s as well, it is imperative that the “journey” be the most productive, timely and rewarding one for all involved.

How I Can Help

  • In depth interview with student and parent(s)
  • Realistic and professional evaluation of the student’s transcript   and high school participation
  • Career exploration
  • A prospective list of schools – “reach,” “realistic” and “safe”
  • Review colleges’ relevant programs
  • Assistance in setting up college visits
  • Post-visit review
  • Application and essay assistance for each individual college/university
  • Personal follow-up with the admissions staff when appropriate
  • A final decision meeting

Student and Parent Testimonials

“Thank you, Mrs. Garr, for always being there for me and for being the consummate counselor who not only helped me get into my dream college, but has kept in contact with me throughout my college years and beyond. Your expertise, compassion, insight and passion for what you do are evident. You are my role-model, and because of you, I am a guidance counselor today.”

“You knew that my family was going through a rough time financially and I know that it was you who made sure that my son got scholarships and financial aid so that he could attend The College of Saint Rose. You are the most dedicated and selfless person we know. We can’t thank you enough.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Garr, for making the college process fun, exciting and as painless as possible. I am sorry that high school has ended, but I certainly will email you often from college. And…guess who’s going to help me get into graduate school?”

“Divorce is not pretty and certainly takes its toll on everyone in the house. You ensured my children kept active and kept their grades up. You made them laugh and made your office their second home. Thank you for getting them involved in community service. Because of you, my children had their best school year ever!”
